Healing Roots Therapy
Art Therapy In Mississauga & Online Across Ontario
A creative way for children, teens, and adults to express emotions, build confidence, and feel more grounded, without needing to find the perfect words.
Art therapy can help you or your child:
Express difficult emotions
Heal from trauma, grief, or bullying
Build emotional regulation & a stronger sense of self
Healing doesn’t have to start with words
Emotions don’t always speak through language; they often live in the body as sensations, images, or tension. And when we try to push away pain or uncomfortable feelings, we can end up disconnecting from joy, creativity, connection, and hope, too. That’s why art therapy can be so powerful.
Creative expression offers a safe, gentle way to begin speaking the language of our emotions.
If you notice any of the following in yourself or your child, art therapy may be a helpful next step
- Difficulty expressing emotions or shutting down when asked about feelings
- Holding onto grief, trauma, or stress
- Frequent worry, restlessness, or emotional outbursts
- Trouble sleeping, low energy, or physical tension (headaches, stomachaches)
- Ongoing struggles with self-esteem, body image, or identity
- Feeling misunderstood, isolated, or overwhelmed
- Changes in mood, behaviour, or motivation that are hard to explain

Who Can Benefit From Art Therapy
In a world that constantly asks us to explain how we feel, art therapy offers a different way in. It creates space to express what’s inside, without needing to have all the right words.
Sometimes kids can’t quite explain what’s going on inside, but their behaviour says a lot. Whether they’re acting out, shutting down, or feeling big emotions they don’t understand, art therapy gives them a creative, pressure-free way to express themselves. It’s especially helpful for children dealing with anxiety, trauma, bullying, or emotional ups and downs.
Being a teen is hard. There’s so much pressure to figure out who you are, fit in, and keep it all together. Art therapy gives teens a space to slow down, be themselves, and work through whatever they’re carrying, without needing to find the perfect words.
If talking feels overwhelming or like it’s just not getting you anywhere, art therapy offers a fresh approach. It’s a gentle, creative way to explore emotions, process grief or trauma, reduce stress, and reconnect with yourself, especially when you’re feeling stuck.
Art therapy can support you or your child through:
- Emotional overwhelm or shutdown
- Anxiety, restlessness, or trouble sleeping
- Trauma, PTSD, or past painful experiences
- ADHD and other forms of neurodiversity
- Grief and loss
- Low self-esteem, identity struggles, or body image issues
- Stress and burnout
- Bullying or social difficulties
- Difficulty communicating or self-advocating
…and whatever else may be troubling you or them

Our Approach
How Art Therapy Works
Art therapy is a gentle, creative process that unfolds at your pace. While every journey is unique, these are the steps we often follow to help you feel safe, supported, and empowered in every stage of life.
1.It Starts With Connection
We begin by getting to know your story and understanding what you hope to achieve through therapy. For children & teens, we’ll also connect with a caregiver to understand the full picture.
2. Safety Before Creativity
Before any art-making begins, we focus on building trust. We want you (or your child) to feel safe, supported, and not rushed.
3. Exploring Materials, Your Way
Once you’re comfortable, we introduce creative tools like paint, markers, or clay. No need to be “artistic”. This is about expression, not perfection.
4. Creating Without Needing The Right Words
You can create freely or respond to gentle prompts. Art offers a way to express emotions and experiences when words are hard to find.
5. Reflecting On What Comes Up
After making art, we take time to notice what it brings up, whether that’s feelings, memories, or just a sense of relief. You share only what feels right.
6. Noticing Patterns & Deeper Meaning
Over time, certain themes or symbols may emerge. We gently explore these together to gain a deeper understanding of what’s happening beneath the surface.
7. Turning Insight Into Growth
As we go, we connect what you’re learning in therapy to your everyday life, helping you build skills such as managing emotions, building confidence, or feeling more grounded.
8. Closing With Care
When it’s time to wrap up, we reflect on your growth and talk about what’s next. Whether continuing or ending therapy, you’ll leave feeling supported.
What You Can Expect From Art Therapy

- You gain tools to manage stress, anxiety, and emotional overwhelm.
- You respond to challenges with more control, instead of reacting impulsively.

Questions About Art Therapy
Art therapy is a type of therapy that uses creative mediums, like drawing, painting, or even working with clay, to help you explore your thoughts and emotions. It’s not about being “good” at art. It’s about using creativity to understand what’s going on inside, especially when words are hard to find. At our clinic, a trained therapist gently guides the process, helping you reflect on what you’ve created and how it connects to your feelings, experiences, and inner world.
Not at all. You don’t need any artistic skill, seriously. Art therapy is about expressing yourself, not making something that looks perfect. Whether you’re using colour to show a feeling or drawing a symbol that represents a memory, what matters is how it helps you process, not how it looks. In fact, a lot of people find it really freeing to create without the pressure to do it “right.”
Art therapy can help with all sorts of things, especially when it’s tough to talk about what you’re feeling. We support kids, teens, and adults with things like:
- Anxiety or feeling emotionally overwhelmed
- Grief, trauma, or past experiences
- ADHD and other forms of neurodiversity
- Low self-esteem or feeling stuck
- Life transitions, identity, or body image struggles
- Stress, burnout, or trouble managing emotions
It’s a great option if you’re feeling shut down, stuck, or just not sure where to start.
Absolutely. One of the best things about art therapy is that you don’t have to talk if you’re not ready. The creative process gives you a way to express yourself without having to explain everything right away. It’s especially helpful for kids, teens, or anyone who feels overwhelmed or unsure where to begin. Often, just making art helps people start to feel clearer and more open when the time feels right.
You’re in the right place! We offer art therapy in person at our Mississauga clinic, and we also work with clients virtually all across Ontario.
