CHILD THERAPY IN MISSISSAUGA

What you and your child can expect in therapy

Every child is different, so we use a variety of techniques and tools to meet your child’s unique needs. Some of the modalities we may use are:
For our individual sessions, we create a safe and comfortable environment for your child to talk about their thoughts, feelings, and any challenges they may be facing. We use a variety of activities, games and conversations to help them express themselves and understand their emotions, and equip them with tools to manage their feelings. We support you as the parent or guardian as well, providing guidance on how you can best help your child outside of counselling sessions.

During these meetings, we can openly discuss your child’s progress, challenges, and the ways you can help at home.

The more you know about your child’s emotional and mental health, the better you can support your child in between counselling sessions.

We arm you with the knowledge to help you feel educated, informed and supported throughout the entire process so you can create lasting change. We work to make sure that you know what is going on, why it’s happening, and how you can effectively help your child in a variety of situations.

Family Therapy: When necessary, we will bring in other members of the family, whether parents or siblings, to get a comprehensive overview of how you can improve communication, resolve conflicts, and enhance relationships in support of your child’s needs.

Collaborative Sessions: Offers a nurturing space for you and your child to connect with the therapist together. These sessions help build a trusting relationship with the therapist, which is especially important if your child feels shy around new people.

You’ll both have the chance to address shared concerns and learn more about each other’s thoughts and feelings, guided by a trained child therapist.

Together, you’ll strengthen your bond and learn valuable strategies to support your child’s emotional development. Participating together also allows you to practice new skills in real time, improving your daily communication and interactions at home.

This form of therapy helps us identify how their negative thought patterns, behaviors and feelings are interconnected. Once we have an idea of the way they cycle thoughts, we can intervene at specific points during the cycle and give them tools they can use to disrupt the thought pattern and shift it to something more positive. In many cases, we use worksheets or activities to help children practice these skills.

With children, like adults, mindfully slowing down their body can in turn slow their thoughts and distressing physiological responses. We guide your child through helpful techniques such as mindful breathing, sensory awareness, mindful eating and mindful movement. Studies have shown that these exercises can help children develop a greater self-awareness, emotional regulation, and the ability to be fully present in the moment.
Some kids are more naturally wired to express themselves through art. When we use this method, we give your child free reign to draw whatever they want, and find that it usually expresses their inner emotions. We can also direct your child towards drawing a particular image to uncover a more specific feeling.

Play is the most natural thing for kids. Right from birth, it’s how they learn, develop and express themselves. Because children often have difficulty expressing their emotions verbally, activities and games can help the thoughts that are running through their head slow down and start to make sense. Playing also shifts your child’s focus from the pressure of talking to an adult to what they are doing; and sharing what’s on their mind often follows.

In behavioral therapy, we work to help your child understand the reasons behind their behavior and ways they can replace negative behaviors with more positive ones. Successful positive reinforcement of these methods will help your child improve their social skills, self control, and overall functioning. We will teach you strategies as well so that you can continue positive progress at home.
