While DBT was initially developed for treating borderline personality disorder, it has been adapted and is effective for various issues, including mood disorders, self-harm behaviours, and emotional dysregulation.
Both therapies aim to change negative thought patterns and behaviours, but DBT emphasizes emotional and social aspects more. DBT also includes mindfulness and acceptance strategies, in addition to change-oriented strategies.

In addition to individual therapy sessions, DBT can include a group component, where clients learn behavioural skills together. These skills are usually divided into four modules: emotional regulation, distress tolerance, interpersonal effectiveness, and mindfulness.
