What issues can EMDR help with?

EMDR therapy has been found to be highly effective for individuals suffering from PTSD, a condition often triggered by experiencing or witnessing a terrifying event. Through the process of EMDR, individuals are helped to safely reprocess traumatic memories, thereby reducing the vividness and distress associated with these memories. Over time, this helps alleviate symptoms of PTSD such as flashbacks, nightmares, and severe anxiety, leading to improved overall emotional well-being.
nxiety disorders, including panic disorder, can cause people to avoid situations that might trigger panic attacks or heightened anxiety. EMDR therapy helps by targeting and reprocessing the memories and experiences that contribute to anxiety and panic symptoms. The therapy aims to reduce the emotional impact of these memories, helping individuals manage and reduce their anxiety more effectively.
Depression can often be linked to past traumatic or distressing experiences that have not been fully processed. EMDR helps individuals to confront and reprocess these painful memories, which can in turn lead to a significant reduction in depressive symptoms. By addressing the root causes of depression, EMDR facilitates a more comprehensive and sustainable healing process.
The pain of losing a loved one can sometimes become overwhelming and complicate the natural process of grief. EMDR therapy can be beneficial in these cases, helping individuals process and come to terms with their loss. Through reprocessing, individuals can begin to reduce the intense pain associated with their loss, allowing them to engage in their lives more fully while still honouring their loved one’s memory.
Phobias often stem from specific traumatic incidents or accumulated distress over time. EMDR therapy targets the distressing memories that contribute to the phobia, helping to desensitize the individual to the feared object or situation. This process can lead to a significant reduction in the intensity of the fear response, helping individuals to overcome their phobias and live more freely.

If you aren't sure if your specific issue can be improved with EMDR therapy, book a consultation and we will help you decide if it's the best course of treatment for you.

Our Approach

How EMDR Therapy Works

EMDR Therapy is an 8-step process. The length of time each step takes will vary based on your specific situaton. There is no rush, we work through them at a pace you are comfortable with.
Number 1

History and Treatment Planning

We take the time to get to know you and your partner. Our first conversations help us understand your greatest struggles and develop a plan to move forward.

Number 2

This phase involves building trust and developing strategies for emotional stability. You’ll learn various coping mechanisms and self-soothing techniques to use during and between sessions.
Number 3

Here, we identify and assess the specific memories that will be the focus of EMDR treatment.
Number 4

This is the core of EMDR, where eye movements (or other bilateral stimulation) are used while you hold the traumatic memory in mind, reducing its emotional impact.
Number 5

The positive beliefs and perceptions identified earlier are strengthened and “installed” in your cognitive framework
Number 6

Body Scan

You’ll be asked to hold the targeted memory in mind again, while noticing any residual physical sensations or discomfort in your body.
Number 7

Here, we identify and assess the specific memories that will be the focus of EMDR treatment.
Number 8

At subsequent sessions, we’ll review the progress made and decide on the next steps.
Unlike traditional forms of talk therapy, EMDR focuses directly on the memory, and is designed to change the way that the memory is stored in the brain, thereby reducing and eliminating the problematic symptoms. It can help you to process and let go of traumatic or disturbing experiences, reducing their impact and helping you to feel less distressed.

questions about EMDR therapy

Given the nature of the treatment and that it involves revisiting painful memories, everyone’s experience with EMDR will be different and some discomfort may be part of the healing process. However, EMDR is specifically designed to be a safe space for processing memories. You are in control of the process, and we are here to provide the necessary support. We’ll work together to develop self-soothing and coping techniques that you can use during and between sessions, ensuring that any distress is manageable and temporary.
The length of EMDR therapy can vary widely based on your individual circumstances, the complexity of your trauma, and how quickly you are able to process the experiences. Some people may see improvement in fewer sessions, while others may require a longer journey. Generally, sessions last between 60-90 minutes, and the number of sessions could range from just a few to several over a period of months. This is something we can discuss in more detail during our initial sessions when we have a clearer picture of your unique needs.
Signs of progress can take different forms, but generally, you might notice a decrease in the intensity of distress linked to traumatic memories, reduced symptoms of anxiety or depression, or a newfound ability to cope with triggers or stressful situations. Many people also report feeling a greater sense of peace, empowerment, and control over their lives. Remember, progress isn’t always linear; there may be ups and downs, but any movement towards healing is a positive step.
EMDR is a versatile therapy that can be effective for a wide range of issues, particularly those related to trauma. However, it may not be the best fit for everyone. Together, we can discuss your specific needs, concerns, and therapeutic goals to determine if EMDR is the right approach for you. It’s important to have a comprehensive evaluation to ensure EMDR is appropriate and can be tailored to meet your unique needs.
Like all therapeutic approaches, EMDR can have some potential risks or side effects. This might include temporary increases in distress or the emergence of new insights or memories. However, EMDR is a generally well-tolerated therapy, and we take care to ensure that you have effective strategies for managing any distress that arises, both during and outside of sessions.
There’s no specific preparation required before starting EMDR. However, maintaining good self-care practices like getting adequate sleep, eating well, and ensuring you have supportive people in your life can be helpful. It might also be beneficial to start cultivating mindfulness practices, such as meditation or deep breathing, as these can enhance your capacity for self-awareness and emotion regulation during therapy.
We understand the intensity of the work involved in EMDR. At any point, if the process feels overwhelming, we can pause and employ grounding techniques to help you regain a sense of calm and safety. You are in control of the pace at which we progress, and your comfort and safety are our utmost priority. Our goal is to ensure that you always feel secure, even when facing the most challenging memories.
