Counselling might be right for your family if you are experiencing:

Family members may not always agree, leading to conflicts that can create stress within the home. Family therapy provides a safe space where everyone’s feelings and viewpoints are valued. Through guided discussions, family members can learn to better understand each other’s perspectives, find common ground, and develop healthier ways of resolving disagreements. This process not only eases current tension, but it also equips families with tools to navigate future conflicts.
Poor communication can lead to misunderstandings and hurt feelings. Family therapy aims to strengthen communication by teaching family members to express themselves openly, honestly, and respectfully. Therapists provide tools and strategies to improve listening skills, encourage empathy, and create a culture of open dialogue within the family. With improved communication, families can experience fewer misunderstandings and deeper connections.
Changes such as moving to a new city, divorcing, or welcoming a new family member can cause stress and unease. Family therapy can offer support during these transitional periods by helping each family member express their feelings and concerns. Therapists work with families to navigate these changes together, promoting understanding, patience, and mutual support.
At times, children and teenagers may exhibit challenging behaviour due to various factors, including stress, school problems, or adjusting to changes. Family therapy helps families understand the root causes of these behaviours and how to respond effectively. Therapists also assist in developing strategies to reinforce positive behaviours, providing a balanced environment for the child’s emotional and behavioural development.
Illness or loss can be a profoundly painful experience that affects every family member differently. Family therapy offers a compassionate and supportive space to express feelings of grief, fear, and confusion. Therapists can guide families in understanding and supporting each other’s grieving processes, and assist them in building resilience and finding ways to move forward together.
Divorce or separation can be an emotionally taxing period for all members of a family. It often involves significant changes in family structure, living arrangements, and daily routines, which can leave family members feeling uncertain and distressed. Family therapy offers a supportive environment for everyone to express their feelings about the change and to understand its impacts on the family dynamics. Therapists can also help parents in maintaining constructive co-parenting relationships, ensuring the well-being of children involved. Additionally, they provide guidance and strategies to manage the emotional transition, aiding the family in creating a new normal out of change.
Our goal in family therapy is to help you improve communication, solve family problems, understand and handle special family situations, and create a better functioning home environment.

Approaches we use in family therapy

In counselling, we may use any one of these approaches, or a blend of them as it is appropriate for your unique situation.
This approach involves evaluating family roles and dynamics to identify issues and patterns. Therapists work to address power dynamics and communication issues that may be creating stress within the family.
This is a more directive type of therapy that focuses on resolving specific problems. Therapists assign tasks to family members to change the way they interact and often involve paradoxical interventions.
This approach focuses on the individual within the context of the family. It’s used when individuals don’t want their entire families to participate in therapy. There’s a strong focus on emotional reactivity and differentiation.
This therapy is grounded in the belief that an individual’s issues cannot be separated from their relationships. Therapists work on changing the system rather than changing individuals.
This type of therapy focuses on what clients want to achieve without focusing on the problems that made them seek therapy.

Questions About Family Therapy

Family therapy is a form of psychotherapy that aims to reduce distress and conflict by improving interaction among family members. It often involves multiple family members and works on the dynamics between them, rather than focusing on individuals in isolation.
The composition of family therapy sessions can vary widely, from including all family members to only those directly involved in the problem. The therapist will help decide which configuration is most beneficial.
While therapists are bound by confidentiality rules, the situation can be a bit complex in family therapy. If everyone is a client (such as in couples or family therapy), the therapist cannot disclose individual secrets shared outside of the therapy session. However, this can vary depending on the situation and the agreement at the start of therapy.
It’s not uncommon for some family members to be reluctant to participate in therapy. Therapists can provide strategies to engage these individuals, but therapy can still proceed and be beneficial even if some family members are not present.
All therapists at Healing Roots Therapy are trained to remain neutral and not take sides. Their role is to facilitate improved communication and understanding among family members, not to judge or decide who is ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ in a given situation. We are committed to helping you reach a a resolution that is best for the family as a whole, and our approach adapts as we go to facilitate that goal.
