Physical Exercise: Its Important Role on Mental Health

Physical exercise is not only beneficial for maintaining physical health, but also for improving mental health. Regular physical activity has been shown to have a positive impact on a variety of mental health conditions, including anxiety and depression.

One of the benefits of exercise on mental health is that it can help to reduce stress. Exercise causes the body to release endorphins, also known as “feel-good” chemicals, which can improve mood and reduce feelings of stress and anxiety. Additionally, the act of moving the body can distract from negative thoughts and provide a sense of accomplishment, leading to an overall sense of well-being.

Positive Impacts of Physical Exercise:

1. Improves sleep quality. Physical activity has been found to improve sleep quality and help with insomnia, it can help to reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety and in some cases can be as effective as medication.

2. Enhances cognitive function, increase the volume of hippocampus, a brain area important for memory and learning, and in general can improve brain health and promote neuroplasticity.

3. Improves self-esteem and body image. Regular physical activity can lead to improved physical fitness and a sense of accomplishment, which can boost self-esteem and confidence.

In summary, physical exercise can have a positive impact on mental health. Regular physical activity can help to reduce stress and improve mood, reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety, enhance cognitive function and improve sleep quality. It also can boost self-esteem and body image.

It is recommended to aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity, such as brisk walking or cycling, five days a week and muscle-strengthening exercises at least twice a week to see the benefits.
