What is a Psychoeducational Assessment?
A psychoeducational assessment is a comprehensive evaluation that helps explain how your child, teen, or young adult learns and why school might feel harder than it should. Conducted by a registered psychologist, the assessment includes interviews, questionnaires, and standardized testing that explore learning abilities, memory, attention, executive functioning, and academic skills like reading, writing, and math.
But it’s more than just testing. It’s a personalized, in-depth process that looks at the whole person: their history, challenges, strengths, and the unique ways they process information.
Whether you’re concerned about ADHD, dyslexia, dysgraphia, giftedness, performance anxiety, or difficulties with focus, organization, or test-taking, a psychoeducational assessment can help uncover what’s going on beneath the surface. It offers a clearer picture of your child’s needs so that you can stop guessing and start supporting them with confidence.
The result is a detailed written report, practical recommendations, and a roadmap for next steps. That could mean classroom accommodations, therapy, academic coaching, or simply having the answers you’ve been searching for.
You want to help your child thrive. A psychoeducational assessment can show you how.

Questions About Psychoeducational Assessments
A psychoeducational assessment is a structured evaluation conducted by a registered psychologist to understand how a person learns. It examines cognitive abilities, academic skills (such as reading, writing, and math), attention, memory, processing speed, and executive functioning. The goal is to identify both learning strengths and areas of difficulty and to provide recommendations that support success in school or academic settings.
You might consider a psychoeducational assessment if you or your child:
- Is struggling academically despite effort or tutoring
- Has difficulty focusing, completing tasks, or staying organized
- Experiences frustration, anxiety, or avoidance related to school
- Has received feedback from teachers suggesting an evaluation
- Is seeking clarity about possible learning disabilities, ADHD, or giftedness
The full psychoeducational assessment process typically takes 3 to 5 weeks, depending on scheduling and complexity. It includes:
- A 60–90 minute intake session
- 1–2 in-person testing sessions (totalling 2–4 hours)
- Scoring and interpretation by the psychologist
- A 60-minute feedback session to review results and recommendations
- A comprehensive written report, provided within 1–2 weeks of the final session
- Talk about the assessment in a positive, supportive way
- Let them know it’s not a test they can pass or fail . It is just a way to understand how they learn
- Make sure they get a good night’s sleep and a healthy meal beforehand
- Bring any tools they use at school, such as glasses or hearing aids
- Encourage them to do their best, and reassure them that this is meant to help, not judge
After the psychoeducational assessment, we’ll schedule a feedback session to go over the findings, answer any questions, and provide recommendations. You’ll also receive a detailed written report that can be shared with your child’s school or post-secondary institution to help request support, such as:
- Individual Education Plans (IEPs)
- Academic accommodations (e.g., extended time, reduced workload)
- Learning strategies or referrals to additional services (e.g., tutoring, therapy)
