Tools and Strategies Used In Thrive Together—An ADHD Program
CBT techniques can help children and parents recognize and challenge unhelpful thought patterns related to ADHD. By exploring how thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are linked, families can learn practical skills to cope with negative self-talk, manage frustration, and stay motivated. Over the 12 weeks, CBT exercises may include setting small, achievable goals and using positive reinforcement to encourage lasting behavioural change.
Behavioural Therapy focuses on creating structured routines and clear expectations to guide children’s behaviour. We’ll work with both parents and kids to develop effective reward systems, consistent consequences, and step-by-step plans for managing impulsivity and emotional outbursts. These strategies aim to reduce conflict at home and in school, making daily life more predictable and supportive.
Many children with ADHD struggle with peer relationships and communication. Social Skills Training sessions can help children practice turn-taking, active listening, reading social cues, and problem-solving in a group setting. Role-plays and interactive games will encourage confidence-building and provide real-life examples of positive interactions, enabling kids to make stronger connections with others.
Mindfulness techniques can teach children (and parents) to become more aware of their thoughts, emotions, and bodily sensations. Simple breathing exercises, guided imagery, and relaxation practices can help calm the mind and improve focus. Throughout the program, these tools can be integrated into weekly activities, promoting self-regulation and reducing stress for both children and parents.
Collaborative Problem Solving emphasizes working together—child and parent—to identify challenges, brainstorm solutions, and implement them in a mutually respectful way. Rather than top-down discipline, the focus is on understanding the child’s perspective and building skills like flexibility, frustration tolerance, and emotional regulation. By practicing this approach, families can create a more positive home environment that encourages open dialogue and shared decision-making.
ADHD Support In Mississauga
What’s Included In Thrive Together—An ADHD Program
Our ADHD program works by providing tailored support for both children and their parents through a structured 12-week framework:
Initial Assessment with the SNAP Questionnaire
We begin by gathering detailed information about the child’s experiences and challenges with ADHD through the SNAP Questionnaire (not a diagnosis tool), discussions, and observations. This helps us understand each family’s unique needs and tailor the program accordingly.
Child Sessions
Children participate in weekly one-hour sessions focused on learning and practicing skills for emotional regulation, organization, social interactions, and building self-esteem through engaging, hands-on activities.
Parent Sessions
Parents attend separate weekly 30-min sessions where they gain effective strategies to support their child, improve family dynamics, and better navigate ADHD-related challenges.
Family Collaboration
Regular family meetings are integrated into the program to align goals, share progress, and address any challenges collaboratively.
Ongoing Practice with Homework and Worksheets
Both children and parents receive assignments and handouts after each ADHD program session to practice the skills they’ve learned. With the help of their parent, children may complete fun and engaging tasks such as emotion identification charts, behaviour observation logs, or organizational activities while parents work on behaviour management strategies, reflective exercises, or collaborative problem-solving techniques.
Progress Check-Ins
Weekly discussions track progress and adjust the focus as needed to ensure the family’s goals are being met effectively.
Integration and Review
In the final weeks, we consolidate all the skills learned, celebrate progress, and create a roadmap for continued success beyond the program.
